It’s hard to find the right eToro Trader out of the millions of traders. Using my eToro Copy Trader filter system, I’ve decided to pick five copy traders each month and track their progress. So, I’ll follow them all and judge their performance against specific criteria. Below you’ll find my chosen Traders to Copy.

eToro Top Traders to Copy statistics breakdown
It should not be a surprise that the virtual account in eToro has some issues, particularly with Copy Trading. I started this competition by copying traders in my virtual account. I have decided that there has become too much of a gap between virtual and reality. From April 2020, I will be using the trader statistics found on their stats page.
This way, I can accurately record the monthly profits/losses and include any potential dividends the Copy Trader received.
My picks for the eToro Top Traders to Copy Competition.
Below you’ll find the participants in this competition. I’ve chosen these traders based on a number of filters and my criteria.
I looked at the stats available to see how they have been performing. Because I’m a Popular Investor myself, I cannot copy anyone in my eToro profile. I watch these traders in eToro and use their statistics page to provide accurate monthly results.
A key aspect is that I treat each of the traders the same. I do not add funds, but it does not matter if they have 10,000 copiers or 0. So, if they fit within my filters, I will look at copying them.

eToro Top Traders to Copy Results to date
I thought it would be better to highlight the results to date first, then dive into each month’s results. So, without holding back. If you want to look at the individual months, I’d suggest playing around in the spreadsheet linked above! Some of the columns are hidden (as we’ve been tracking many for over two years now!).
Overall Trader Rankings
This table looks at each of the traders, their results and their average return per month.
Congratulations to Jaynemesis, Marianopardo, emge2116, 2BSmart, and Fortick for making our Top 5 traders to date (end of April 2022). Well done!
Profit and Loss progress
This table looks at how we are doing from a $ point of view. As mentioned before, each trader is ‘allocated’ $500. After all the trades, this is how we are looking.
Besides the overall table, it is helpful to check out the cumulative growth chart. As you can see, there has been a significant drop off since peaking in December 2021.
Month to month Growth
The chart below shows how we are growing each month compared to the previous month. This month, we have another great month, with a gain of $97 when compared to last month.
Top eToro Traders of 2022
This year started slowly, with some promise leading into the first few months, and then everything started falling hard. It’s been a few months of delayed blogging, but I’m trying to get back into it and keep this competition relevant.

The eToro Top Traders to Copy in 2021
After a fantastic 2020, why not keep this party going? Below are the results for 2021 so far – month by month.
October 2021 – The best eToro Traders to start copying
October proved to be a great month with a solid average return per trader. We welcome Dafne17 to the competition. Davide has established himself with solid returns, intelligent choices in his holdings and a relatively low-risk score against his profits. Whilst he gained an excellent 13.3% for October, we won’t start comparing him in the long term until a few months have passed to ensure a level playing field.
Golden_axe reigned supreme this month, breaking the highest % gain in a single month with +19.68%, a solid performance, so well done!

August 2021 – The best eToro Traders to start copying
Long live $SPY !! This month, SPY was our number one performer – something that hasn’t happened in the last two years of this competition. Now, this doesn’t mean much as we are only looking at one month out of 25+ months this competition has been running. When we look at traders to copy, we’re looking long term. So, one month or 3% of the competition isn’t something to boast about. In fact, we still have eight traders who are beating SPY on average across their whole copying experience.
For July 2021, our top traders to copy on eToro underperformed as a whole. With only six traders posting a positive gain for the month. As I mentioned before, this doesn’t mean much when we zoom out and see how they are performing since inception. All of the traders I have chosen have posted a positive gain since copying them. Don’t forget that the traders you copy should complement each other, not compete against each other.
Top 5 eToro Traders we copied for July 2021
Well done to the traders above for posting great returns in July 2021. I must admit, it was great to be back in the top 5 after a few slow months. Onwards and upwards!
July 2021 – The best eToro Traders to start copying
Each and every month, there are literally thousands of eToro traders that you might think of copying. The biggest issue we have is that we are spoilt by choice. Finding the best trader to copy and to help you with your copytrading journey is one that you will have to make on your own. I, and other traders, can only guide you towards who we think the best one is. We don’t know your trading style, financial situation or anything else that may influence your decision. All I can recommend is that you take your time, do your research and fit the perfect fit.
Traders should complement each other in your portfolio, not compete.
June had a great turnout this month, with the majority of our traders posting high returns. 10 traders posted +6% and above returns, and 15 of our traders beat the SP500 benchmark.

Well done to the traders above for posting great returns in June 2021. Let’s hope their hot streak continues into July 2021!
June 2021 – The best eToro Traders to start copying
May had an overall negative month when looking at average returns. This month finished -0.7% and fell below our benchmark of the SP500, which returned +0.55% for May 2021. The team were evenly split between those who produced a positive return and those who fell for the month. We had a few more traders this month beat the SP500 compared to April 2021, and there is still nine traders beating our benchmark, which is a great result.

4 | Laurentdevriendt | 0.81% |
5 | GrePod | 0.76% |
In the spreadsheet, you’ll notice I’ve highlighted a few traders in amber. This means, for one reason or another, that I’m keeping an eye on their performance. It could be because they have over-allocated in certain markets, or that they have too big of a holding in cash.
Let us hope these great returns continue into 2021.
May 2021 – The best eToro traders to start copying
April was a solid month, with an average of 3.34% across our top copytraders. The field has narrowed due to removing some of the previous candidate but no one was removed this month, nor was anyone added. Even though there were some great gains across the field, only 4 traders were able to beat the SP500.

1 | emge2116 | 9.01% |
2 | GrePod | 7.02% |
3 | Marianopardo | 6.76% |
4 | Rubymza | 6.01% |
5 | SPY | 5.24% |
Well done to the traders above, and it was great to see the SPY back in the Top 5. After its Top 3 finish last month, it’s having quite the run. I’m keeping an eye on GrePod at the moment due to some portfolio allocations, but I have faith that this was only a once-off.
Let us hope these great returns continue into 2021.
Another chart I would like to show depicts how the P/L act month to month.
Month to Month growth
Here you can see the biggest loss in one month was $724.90, whilst we have 4 months of more than $730+ growth. I think this chart puts a different perspective on the results to date.
April 2021 – The best eToro traders to start copying
After some great performances, there were mixed results in March 2021 for our eToro Top Copy Traders. We had to remove four traders from the competition as they went against some of the rules I’ve abided by when first starting the competition. Without further delay, here are the statistics for March 2021. We had three traders all equal 5th which is something new for the competition.

5 | MLPepe | 2.03% |
5 | Raphaellairini | 2.03% |
5 | emge2116 | 2.03% |
Well done to the traders above, and it was great to see the SPY back in the Top 3. Something that hasn’t happened in a very long time.
I have removed three top copytraders from the competition, including IrinaBur, who joined and left in the same month. This was due to her profile no longer being accessible for one reason or another.
As we currently sit, all of the Top CopyTraders, except for 1, are in positive territory. Some of the more savvy readers would have noticed that some of the %’s have changed. This is due to (and rightly so) Jaynemesis calling out how the calculations were done – long story, short – I was wrong and have rectified the results.

Well done to the traders above, scorching hot start for 2021.
I have removed one trader from the competition – EddieKH due to him liquidating most of his assets and going all-in on the GME hype train. Not that there is anything wrong with that but it just goes against the rules of the competition. So thank you Eddie for your contributions over the last 20 months. With Eddie leaving the flock, we’ve made room for an up and comer – IrinaBur – good luck in the competition!
The Top CopyTraders for 2020
What… A… Year for the Top CopyTraders! I do not think anyone expected a year like we just had but you will soon see that some of our Top CopyTraders outperformed the market significantly. We are going to look at December results, then look at the traders I have been following for the whole of 2020 and see how they performed. First up, highlighting the traders to keep an eye on in 2021.
January 2021 – The best Copy traders to start copying
After a crazy 2020, I cannot wait to see what the traders have in store for us. We had a relatively successful month. 21/24 traders ended in positive territory, with 12 traders outpacing the SP500 benchmark. As a further testament to this, 11/12 of these traders I have been following for more than a year! Shoutout to Jaynemesis for being the only one under 1yr (c’mon Jay!)
You can now view your own copy of the competition here – let me know if you have any feedback.
For all the traders, we had an average growth of 3.36% which is a solid month. You will be able to see the growth in the chart below. 3 CopyTraders posted +9% returns and 6 CopyTraders posted +5% returns for the month. Solid effort and well-done everyone!
We did not need to remove anyone from the competition because for the first time (ever, I think), every single one of the Top CopyTraders is in positive territory for the Copytrade – congratulations and well done. This provides further evidence that copying traders for a longer period have a strong chance of becoming positive. So, do not look at days/weeks – look long term.

2020 – eToro Top Copy Trader Competition Results
This is how the competition looks at the end of 2020.
The above is sorted on Avg Per Month. This means that I take their growth and divide it by how long I have been copying them for. The first thing you will notice is that all our traders are in positive territory – how good!?!!
The next new addition is the last column. This shows how many times that trader has made the top 3 as a % of the result vs months copied. That means that Jaynemesis has made the Top 3 80% of the time. Well done Jay!
Congratulations to Jaynemesis, Ghazfx, Marianopardo, Fortick, and mihailtsankov for making our Top 5 traders to date. Well done!
December 2020 – The best Copy traders to start copying
I know what you’re thinking – what the eff happened to November? Well… I saved all the information but forgot to update the blog! So this update will combine both November and December 2020.
We have a mixed months for results in October and November. October ended with an average of -0.55%, with those in positive territory were the bears. Things changed around for November with crazy returns – 9 traders gaining over 11% and only 1 trader posting a loss for the month.
We said goodbye to two traders Havelock and welovetradingcom, who both have seemed to liquidate their accounts and moved from the eToro platform. But as their light extinguishes, I’ve added a new trader Ghazfx – welcome to the competition and good luck!

Our traders had an average month of trading with only 4 traders making positive returns. The positive side is that 22/25 beat the SPY ETF for the month, which is good sign. Those who shorted the market seemed to have done the best this month. Our average return per trader for the month is -0.96% so whilst not the worst result, still not ideal.

We say goodbye to fcqxzjc this month and thank them for their contribution. Unfortunately, bad results paired with what seems to be a closed account means than they are no longer in the competition. Whilst fcqxzjc has left, a new promising trader has joined our ranks.
Welcome emge2116 ! Good luck in the competition and I’m excited to see what you can bring over the coming months.

May – what a month! We bounced back to positive territory as many of our traders posted nice profits. Each of the traders are performing well and as such, we will not be removing any traders this month.
April was a great month for the bulls, and it closed off one of the best months since the 1980s. With the recent update to the CopyTrader statistics, it has given me a greater insight into accurate copy profitability. As a result, we will be saying goodbye to two traders as they have not produced the best results to stay in the competition.

As March was all over the shop, I’ve decided to keep the group of traders the same. Most of the traders took a hit over the month, so there was a sea of red by the end of it. Even though we are now down for the month, our traders have made some solid trading choices to set us up for the coming months. Overall they are still performing at an acceptable level but it will show towards the end of April how well they handle a bear market.

My Top eToro Copy Traders might not be the same as yours. You need to look at your trading style to ensure that it aligns with what you’re looking for. There are literally millions of people you can copy on eToro. So this will help you copy the right eToro Copy Trader.
Finding the right trader is always an exciting activity. I highly recommend using the Virtual Account first to see how they trade. Look at copying a trader for over 4-5+ months. Waiting another month isn’t going to hurt your portfolio growth.
Another note, I would avoid any trader that has to shout out to people to copy their profile. Their stats should entice you to copy their portfolio, not what they say. Actions speak louder than words!
Below are the eToro Popular Investors that eToro believes you should be copying – do any of them make your list?
[…] trader to suit your trading style. Although I don’t copy anyone in my portfolio, I do hold a competition of traders to see how can return the best growth over a period of […]
I am confused. When I look at Havelock’s stats on etoro, they are quite different to what you show in your chart? 39% profit in the last 4 months for you, but from what I can see, Jan/Feb he made a loss of 3.8% and for the whole of 2019 a profit of 18.4% (mostly because of a good start to the year, before you copied him?). I am confused.
Hey mate – thanks for the comment. I assumed it was because of when I started copying his open trades but upon further investigation, it opened at 6.07 that day… which isn’t possible as TVIX hasn’t dropped to that level in the last year at all, the sold for 77 odd the next week (+1000% rise!). I’ll raise a ticket with eToro to check out this glitch – one of the key reasons he is at the top of the list is from this trade alone. I’ll let you know how it goes!
Hey Will
This is the email I got from eToro – hope it clarifies things for you!
….
Thank you for contacting eToro customer service.
Please be advised that on December 2nd, 2019 TVIX underwent a reverse stock split.
A reverse split is a market event in which a company decides to reduce the number of existing shares and in so doing, increase the value of each share according to a certain ratio. For example if the ratio is 1:2, the stockholder will have 1 share for every 2 shares previously held. The amount of shares are reduced by the same ratio in order to offset the artificial rise in value, while maintaining the same overall value of the holding.
The way we respond to a split is by adjusting the original opening rate of the affected trade to reflect the new rates after the reverse split and ensure that all subsequent profit calculations are correct.
As such, prior to the split the Bid rate was 6.26 and after the split it was 62.60
We hope this clarifies things for you.

This looks like it needs a youtube channel.
You are doing great work here my friend
Thank you, appreciate it!
Great long term review of copy traders and a lot of work, I’m sure!
A quick question on how you calculate the monthly gain percentage, particularly as you mention in another article the difference between Portfolio % performance vs actual trade performance?eToro themselves seem to be using formula of equity and withdrawals/deposit, but not actual trade performance, ie closed trades and profit banked?
Thanks for the comment, appreciate it! At the moment it is based off portfolio growth, not realised gains. I used to copy them via the virtual account but there were too many bugs to have an accurate reading (plus I couldn’t copy then with my real account as it would impact me as a popular investor). When researching new copytraders, I do take into account their realised trades. Another issue is that the realised gains don’t have the best time frame filter so makes it hard to get monthly or YTD %
Thanks for the speedy response Joe. I’m not even sure how to find realised gains in the trader profile?
Another issue I have is that I can’t seem to reconcile the returns displayed in the copy trader search results, with the actual yearly performance totals in the trader profiles.
Take for example Jaynemesis. In the search results (2 Years as time period), his return is 231.87%. However when I add up the performance results from the profile (2019: 52.32 ; 2020: 103.51 ; 2021: 7.06), I only get 162.89%?
Thanks for any help you can provide in clarifying.
Realised gains are displayed under “history” drop down within their profile. So, go to Jays profile, click on portfolio, you’ll see on the top left area “portfolio” with a drop down arrow. Click that and it should display history. The 2 years gains is a bit of a tricky calculation that eToro uses that compounds, rather than adds up. So it’s month 1 X month 2 X month 3 X month 4 etc rather then m1 + m2 + m3 etc
Thanks Joe.
Another question regarding the methodology you use to select traders.
I know it may be too much effort to follow more than 25 traders, but if you’re only removing traders from your list after a lack in profit for 2 months, won’t there be a lot of other, potentially great traders that you miss, as long as the existing 25 post profits (even if it’s only small profits, potentially for a long period of time)?
Also, when you add new traders do you add their historical performance or only from the time you select them onwards?
Thanks again for putting in all this effort, a really valuable resource!
I picked 25 as a personal number (mostly as it can get quite taxing if I have many more than that). I don’t always remove the trader if they’ve had a few bad months, especially if they have been performing previously. After 2-3 months of bad trades, I scrutinise their portfolio even further and add them to my ‘watch list’ to monitor their performance. So it may be 4-6 months of bad trading before they get removed. It’s an ad-hoc review and based on my own personal views, so what I look for might be different from other traders! When I add a new trader, I do look at their past performance, but I only count from when I first added them to the competition, similar to copying someone. One problem with eToro is that there are so many traders to pick from, so there’s no doubt in my mind that there’ll be traders that don’t even show up on my radar that have a stellar performance. Each copier has their own set of filters/guides they can follow and that’s what makes it unique. Hope that makes sense
Thanks Joe, appreciate your perspective and explanation.
Nice to see my name there on your all-stars team 🙂 Thanks for seeing me as an worthy investor. Don’t you think it would be nice to incorporate some kind of risk factor in your calculations? In general, the “profits” number tells you nothing without knowing how much risk the investor is taking!
Thanks, Marko – you’ve been performing well, so it was a no-brainer to add you! Regarding risk factor, are you referring to the actual risk score, or more from a how much $ to allocate to the trader? Each of the traders is allocated “$500” upon copying but I will note I don’t take into consideration withdrawals/deposits and it would quickly skew the results having traders with more money allocated than the others. I base the growth off the monthly results, which ratio out when taking into consideration the deposit/withdrawals
It would be interesting to add benchmark (probably S&P500) “Avg profit per month” for each trader into the summary table at the very top. Because you started with each trader at different month, it is hard for the reader to do that manually.
Thanks for the feedback – there is the average per month, which shows their total profit/number of months copied in the table near the top of that is what you’re referring to (including SPY ETF for comparison). Or are you after the average called out specifically by itself in a table near the top?
